Porcelain Veneers vs. Porcelain Crowns
Both are beautiful, long-lasting porcelain restorations — but they serve very different purposes. Understanding the difference helps you and Dr. Nail choose the right solution for your smile.
The Short Answer
Same Material. Very Different Purpose.
Both veneers and crowns are made from high-quality dental porcelain and look completely natural. The difference is how much of the tooth they cover — and why.
Porcelain Veneers
A veneer is a thin porcelain shell — about the thickness of a contact lens — bonded to the front surface only of a tooth. It's a conservative, cosmetic solution for teeth that are structurally healthy but visually imperfect.
Because only a small amount of enamel is removed from the front, veneers preserve most of your natural tooth structure while delivering a dramatic cosmetic improvement.
Porcelain Crowns
A crown is a full cap that covers the entire visible tooth from all sides. It's used when a tooth is damaged, weakened, or structurally compromised and needs complete protection and restoration of function.
Crowns restore full chewing strength and protect the underlying tooth structure. They are the standard of care after root canals, large fractures, or significant decay.
Coverage Explained
How Much Tooth Do They Cover?
Veneer: Front Surface Only
Covers only the visible front face of the tooth. The back, sides, and biting edge remain natural tooth structure.
Crown: Full 360° Coverage
Encases the entire visible tooth from all sides, providing complete protection and restoring full biting strength.
Clinical Indications
When Is Each One Recommended?
The right choice depends on the condition of your tooth, not just your cosmetic goals.
VChoose a Veneer When…
Key requirement: The tooth must be structurally sound with sufficient enamel for bonding. Active decay or significant structural damage rules out veneers.
CChoose a Crown When…
Key requirement: When the tooth's structural integrity is compromised, a crown is the appropriate restoration — regardless of cosmetic goals.

Smile Makeovers
Sometimes You Need Both
In a comprehensive smile makeover, it's common to use veneers on healthy front teeth for cosmetic refinement while placing crowns on teeth that have been damaged, filled, or treated with root canal therapy. All restorations are matched to the same custom shade for a seamless, natural result.
Dr. Nail will evaluate each tooth individually and recommend the most conservative, appropriate restoration — never over-treating healthy teeth or under-treating compromised ones.
Not sure which you need?
Dr. Nail will review your dental X-rays, examine your teeth, and walk you through your options during a consultation — with no pressure and no surprises.
